Description

A simple and delicious San Marzano tomato sauce perfect for pasta or as a base for other dishes.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 28 oz canned whole San Marzano tomatoes
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and chopped onion; sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.
  2. Crush canned tomatoes by hand and add them to the skillet with their juices.
  3. Season with salt, pepper, and sugar if desired. Stir well.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 20-30 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil leaves.

Notes

  • For a spicier variation, add red pepper flakes during cooking.
  • This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for longer storage.
